Garie Tang
IBJJF Nogi World Champion (M1) – Brown Belt IBJJF Asian Open Champion – Blue Belt 3x SEA Games Medalist 3x National BJJ Champion 4x National Freestyle Wrestling Champion
Biography
Upon graduating from university with First Class Honours, Garie went straight into coaching and competing full-time, dedicating himself fully to martial arts as both a coach and athlete.
From fighting on the UK Muay Thai circuit and representing Singapore across multiple SEA Games campaigns, to grappling in Kazakhstan alongside some of the best teams in the world, Garie brings over a decade of high-level competitive experience to Method Academy.
In 2019, Garie was selected as a UFC Scholarship recipient at the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai. His achievements also include becoming the first Singaporean to win the IBJJF No-Gi World Championships (M1), winning the IBJJF Asian Open, becoming a 3-time SEA Games medalist, 2-time SEA Freestyle Wrestling medalist, and 4-time National Freestyle Wrestling Champion, making him one of the most decorated combat sports athletes Singapore has produced.
Beyond his own competition career, Garie has coached and cornered athletes to victories at the highest levels of the sport in both the UFC and ONE Championship. His students range from kids and hobbyists to competitive athletes, law enforcement personnel, and Special Forces operatives. Most recently, Garie also took on the role of BJJ National Team No-Gi Coach.
Over the years, Garie has worked with organisations including LinkedIn and Meta, while also developing programmes and conducting martial arts training for officers from the Singapore Police Force.
Garie's teaching philosophy centres around one key principle: learning how to learn. His classes are designed not just to teach techniques, but to help students understand movement, timing, positioning, and decision-making through structured and deliberate training. Whether coaching a first-time student or preparing an athlete for competition, his focus remains the same: long-term development, technical understanding, and building a strong learning culture.
As a co-founder of Method Academy, Garie aims to create an environment where learning comes before ego, and where martial arts can become a vehicle for physical, mental, and personal growth. He also hopes to foster a community where people push each other forward, form meaningful friendships, and grow stronger together through martial arts.
